The Palace, in Order

Bahia Palace was built in phases across four decades with no master plan, so it has no symmetry and no single correct route. Most visitors walk a vague loop and leave unsure whether they saw everything. Seven spaces, in the order the circuit takes you.

Tap any block to read what it is, what most people walk past, and what happened there.

Schematic, not a survey. It is accurate about the order you meet the spaces and which ones adjoin. The blocks are not drawn to scale and their proportions are not the real footprints.

Main entrance

Heavy studded doors on Rue Riad Zitoun el Jedid, opening into a narrow, dim corridor.

What rewards a slower look

  • The ironwork studs and carved frame of the gate itself, which most visitors walk straight past.
  • The first painted ceiling panel is directly above you in the corridor.
  • The darkness is deliberate. It makes the first courtyard feel larger than it is.

Walking the full circuit at this pace: 60 to 100 minutes.

What this drawing is

It is a schematic of sequence and adjacency. It is accurate about the order you meet the spaces and which ones adjoin. It is not a measured plan: the blocks are not scaled, and their proportions are not the real footprints.

Measured plans of the palace were published by Gaston Deverdun in 1959. Drawing something that merely looked surveyed would be inventing evidence, so this page does not. 8 hectares including the agdal garden, of which the built palace is nearly 2 hectares of built palace.
